In his column comparing St. Luke and Karl Marx, Joseph Reisert focused on Marx' famous rejection of the notion that Christianity (or any religion) might play a positive role in creating a just society.

It's worth remembering the influence of Marx' own Lutheran upbringing (a theme that Cornel West has explored).

In the origins of capitalism, like Marxism, is the idea that life could be better for more if power and resources were more equally distributed, more strategically deployed.

If capitalism is to flourish, it must be with this same hope in mind, a hope that's been instrumental in the formation and reformation of the great world religions, as we humans struggle to remember that our goods and services are instruments for building communities where "the good life" is available for all.
