In Ronald Reagan's book, "Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation," he wrote, "Make no mistake. Abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution. No serious scholar has ever argued that the framers of the Constitution intended to create such a right."
The tranquil, private setting of the Augusta Family Planning Association of Maine on Gabriel Drive is in sharp contrast to the violence regularly performed there on these defenseless babies whose only crime is to have been conceived.
During the Forty Days for Life, from Feb. 25 to April 5, a peaceful prayer vigil is taking place across from that facility and, in my opinion, that is a wonderful gesture. It is important to note it is not a demonstration nor is it a protest.
Why 40 days? God has used the period of 40 days throughout history to bring about major transformation. Consider the following examples:
Noah during 40 days of rain; Moses after 40 days on Mt. Sinai; Elijah given 40 days of strength with one meal; Nineveh given 40 days to remain faithful; Jesus' 40 days in the desert; The disciples' 40 days with Jesus after his resurrection.
What will the prayer vigil accomplish? Changed hearts? Saved lives? God alone knows but he does expect us to do all we can to end the senseless slaughter of the innocents.
