Freedom should reinstate commercial ordinance
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel 05/15/2008

On Tuesday May 27, a public hearing will be at Dirigo Grange Hall, Route 137, in Freedom at 7 p.m., about reinstating the town's Commercial Development Review Ordinance retroactive to June 12.

The vote on reinstating this ordinance will be at the June 10 referendum.

Repealing that ordinance last year took away the rights of Freedom residents to be protected from any large commercial business that may want to come into our town. I believe the repeal effort was led by the wind turbine developer and its supporters so they would not have to obey any rules or have any restrictions to get in their way. They succeeded.

People living near the wind project in Mars Hill have reported many health problems because of the turbine noise and strobe effect of the blades. The mountain that once was available for recreation, hunting, etc. is now gated off and signs have been posted warning, "Falling Ice and Snow May Be Present, Stay Clear."

Not only are people being affected, but it has been reported that wildlife is disappearing.

If you want our town protected from what has happened at Mars Hill, as well as at the many other turbine sites in our country where the developer promised residents there would be no problems, vote to reinstate the Commercial Development Review Ordinance.

I'm appealing to the residents of Freedom to get out and vote on June 10 no matter what your opinion is regarding this ordinance.
