Why Ron Paul's
message resonates
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel 12/28/2007

Two hundred thousand people have donated to Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul this quarter, totaling more than $18 million. He has received more active military donations than any other candidate; 73,000 people have joined Ron Paul Meetup.com groups around the country. These supporters are printing flyers and signs. They are independently raising money to produce television, radio and newspaper advertisements. They raised $400,000 to fly a Paul blimp over the early primary states.

These supporters are regular people, not lobbyists, not corporations. Why has Paul attracted so much grassroots support?

During Paul's 10 congressional terms, he never voted to raise taxes. He voted against the Patriot Act. He voted against the Iraq war. A President Paul would bring the troops home immediately. He would end a foreign policy of meddling in the affairs of other nations. That alone would provide us with enough savings to render the federal income tax unnecessary. If we got rid of the federal income tax tomorrow, the government would only need to return to its year 2000 budget.

Please Google Ron Paul (as the homemade supporter signs say). You'll find a humble, honest doctor who has been delivering the same message since he began serving the public. That message is individual freedom, Constitutional government and a free market. Please consider participating in your town's Republican caucus Feb. 1, 2 or 3. You must register Republican at least 15 days prior. Caucus is where your vote counts.

Wayne,

Do you realize that one of the "conservative" justices of the Supreme Court, Thomas, is so whacko that he "doesn't recognize" precedent in case law. What the "conservatives" on the Supreme Court have done is actually judicially "activist" in the worst way. You're being fed horse doodle and enjoying the meal. But then again, if people who call themselves "conservative" really understood what people are doing in their name, they'd be applalled. Either that or in need of some serious treatment or other. By the way, "conservatives" like to talk about the "constitution." Well, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" never applied to "slaves." Right? So don't talk about the Constitution, you'll only embarrass yourself Mr. Conservative. Why don't you read The Nine by Jeffrey Toobin for a little reality about "conservatives" on the Supreme Court. Wayne, you talk "general welfare clause" and yet, exempt "conservatives" from explaining so many other things, like how the Constitution can be applied in a "liberal" way, as "conservatives" attempt, when they deny things like how it "applied" to slavery. It's a joke! The Constituion is "elastic" and all the Federalist society and others are trying to do now is pick and choose. It's the way of an adolescent by the way.report abuse

Ron Paul stands by his oath to uphold the Constitution - and the general welfare clause does NOT mean every individual's welfare, only the welfare of THE UNITED STATES as a unified sovereign nation, notwithstanding the Supreme Court's tendencies of late.report abuse

Of all the Republicans, the only one I feel is truly honest is Ron Paul. I won't be voting for Paul or anyone else with an R before their name on the ballot because of what people with an R before their name have done to America. But I have to give Paul credit, he's honest. The Republican establishment will NEVER let him succeed because he's not one of them, the bought-and-paid for corporate lackey like Rudy or Rommney. The Republican establishment would rather lose to Hillary than allow someone like Paul or Huckabee to represent them. Just listen to that Republican propagandist Sean Hannity and you'll figure that out quickly!report abuse

I believe that too, which is why I supported Clinton's welfare reform. Also, I'm absolutely against people like Paris Hilton getting massive tax breaks while our American troops languish in Iraq for sub-standard pay. So maybe we are closer to agreeing on some things than I could have ever imagined. I hope so. Fundamentally, I believe that when reasonable Americans examine what Bush and Republicans have done, they will be repulsed precisely because they care about this country and want to preserve it.report abuse

Vivobusho,

No. I don't. I don't think the richest of the rich should get "corporate welfare" and I don't think individuals should either.

I think everyone should work. E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E. Get it? I said it real slow.report abuse

Kidatheart,

So you think it perfectly fine that Bush gave massive tax cuts to silver spoon trust fund babies who were born to luxury, for little more than kickbacks into Republican accounts? Oh well, I guess any outrage is fine with you as long as it benefits both the wealthy like George W. Bush who hasn't worked an honest day in his life, and others like him.report abuse

"Ron Paul would unravel the safety net that many Mainers rely on. LIHEAP? Forget it!"

Good, pay your way, or go to a state that doesn't REQUIRE HEATING OIL for 6 months.

Maybe the government should supply our clothes too...that would benefit general welfare. Imagine if nobody had clothes...oh the horror.report abuse

Ron Paul would unravel the safety net that many Mainers rely on. LIHEAP? Forget it! Educational assistance for the poor? Don't be ridiculous. Environmental oversight of wealthy polluters? A God-given right in a Paul administration.

According to the Constitution, one of the purposes of government is to provide for the general welfare. Mr. Paul and his Libertarian supporters would ignore their responsibility for personal gain.

Ron Paul is just a symptom of the fact that at least SOME Republicans understand what a monstrous disservice Bush and Republicans have done to the United States since 1995, and yet they are INCAPABLE of grasping that they need to reject the Republican party. Some people just place their fetish for party above the good of the country.report abuse
