We're not confounded at Sen. Collins' performance
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel 12/14/2007

The latest polls for Maine's U.S. Senate race have simply confirmed what voters have known for years: that Susan Collins is doing a fantastic job serving the people of Maine. Several polls have shown Collins leading her challenger, Tom Allen, by more than 20 percentage points and her approval ratings remain sky high. This is not all that surprising considering that Collins is a diligently hard worker, has proven an ability to get things done, and has exhibited a moderate, pragmatic streak during her time in the Senate.

While Mainers have long been aware of these facts, some national media outlets and political analysts are just coming to realize how strong her appeal truly is. Chris Cillizza, a political analyst for The Washington Post, summed up his feelings about the Maine Senate race, saying that "this race continues to confound."

Why is Cillizza confounded? Well, he probably assumes like many in the national media that Maine's U.S. Senate race will be close because Maine is a blue state and the Iraq war will hurt Collins. These reporters, however, fail to recognize that voters in this state don't choose their elected officials based on party affiliations, but make those decisions based on performance.

In 2008, Maine voters will reject the blatant partisanship of Allen's campaign and will re-elect a senator who values getting things done over her party label.

Pardon my error.

Mahoney is now Chair of the UMF College Republican's club:

Saluting the troops, while standing up in a (stolen) grocery shopping cart?

I'm "confounded," re: why 5K+ Maine's College Republican club's chapter members haven't enlisted in the Army?

Let's show some authentic "patriotism" (vs. spewing relentless partisan rhetoric).

Support Collins's "surge" propaganda; & all Maine College Republican Club chapter's Chickenhawks may enlist in the Army here:

(Pssssssst: there's an "enlistment bonus incentive" in it for 'ya).

Mainers who possess half a brain can *research* Mahoney's identity on Google in a couple of seconds (e.g., UMF's College Republican club's Vice-Chair).

...nothing "confounded" about it.

A "Republican" involved in "higher education" is an oxymoron, thus this letter writer affiliating with UMF is absurd. There's nothing removely logical about Republican dogma. That college students can't be objective enough or knowlegeable enough to see through the smoke of anti-middle class Republican dogma isn't saying good things about both the college AND student(s).report abuse

The race hasn't even started and Collins is an incumbant. This letter-writer obviously hasn't been following Senate votes. There's nothing "independent" about Collins, she's a Republican who claims to be "independent" but is nothing more than a willing pawn of the same Republican party that is up to its eyeballs in deceit.report abuse

If Senator Collins loses her Senate seat, she can thank George Bush. She supported the war in Iraq and voted to confirm the worst Attorney General, Alberto Gonzalez knowing that he was behind the torture memos. In 2005 the Senate voted 92-2 to rein in the CIA and make it subject to Military guidelines on interrogation. She and Jane Harmen worked with the White House and caved in to pressure from Condi Rice. Collins was quoted in the New York Times as saying the issue was too complex for present legislation. She agreed to curtial the amendment with the undersstanding that the subject would be taken up later. It never was until the McCaine amendment. Collins voted for the amendment to limit CIA interrogations to the Army Field Manual but Bush emasculated the amendment with a signing statement. What did Senator Collins do. She voted again for the confirmation of Mr Mukasey for Attorney General who basically lied when he said he did not know if waterboarding is torture.

You can bet that Senator Collins will soon be trying to distance herself from Bush's imperial and unconstitutional presidency. For many Mainers it will be too late.report abuse

Keith Mahoney is the chairman of the UMF College Republicans and was named "Activist of the Year" by the Maine College Republicans Organization.

Mr. Mahoney is entitled to his opinion, but since he chose not disclose his bias, I thought I would.report abuse

Collins has been a consistent enabler of George W. Bush: the needless invasion of Iraq, tax cuts for millionaires, tax breaks for big oil...the list goes on and on. As a member of the Republican minority in the Senate that has consistently blocked needed legislation by virtue of the "60 vote" rule, Collins is part of the problem in Washington. Maine voters have to decide if they seriously want to see a change of direction in Congress. If they do, a vote for Collins makes NO sense.

However, if you want like the direction the country's going in, vote for Collins, by all means. report abuse
