Make Snowe and Collins pay for terrible new law
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Before the last Congressional elections, Congress passed the Military Commissions Act. This is a horrific, un-American, unconstitutional and immoral law. Sen. Susan Collins voted for this law. Sen. Olympia Snowe wrote that she strongly supported s.3901, the Military Commissions Act of 2006 introduced by Sen. Warner. It is my understanding that both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney pushed very hard to have this passed by Congress.

It is my understanding that the Military Commissions Act does the following four things: (1) took away habeas corpus (I believe the legal right to challenge one's detention in the light of a court hearing that people have had since the 1200s); (2) lets the Bush administration interpret the Geneva Conventions, thus allowing the Bush administration to continue to allow for torture; (3) allows for the Bush administration to determine who is an American enemy combatant (even though this person(s) could be completely innocent), and to detain this person(s) indefinitely while refusing to allow this person(s) to get a lawyer; (4) allows for increased sweeping up of innocent legal immigrants in America and to detain them indefinitely.

It is my understanding that both Collins and Snowe have refused to support Sen. Dodd's legislation that would repeal what I think are some of the horrible aspects of this law.

Therefore, I think both Collins and Snowe should be soundly defeated in upcoming elections and that Bush and Cheney should be impeached.

Also, don't forget...Susan Collins voted for the following (not a complete list):

Military Commissions Act (pro-torture)
Patriot Act
Bankruptcy Bill (her biggest contributor:MBNA)
All of Bush's tax cuts
To repeal the Estate Tax forever (only affects a small percentage of the population....the wealthiest)
Iraq occupation (Tom Allen did not right from the start)
To confirm Samuel Alito (he's actively doing away with a women's right to choose and at some point will be the deciding vote to banish Roe v. Wade. We need lots of democrats to be elected in 2008 to control this heinous US Supreme Court!)

This is just a sampling of her record. You can find more at my blog by clicking on "Susan Collins" in the right hand sidebar:

Yep. Both of Maine's jackboot lickers (Collins & Snowe) have made sure George Bush's illegal, unethical, and downright un-Constitutional policies get through time after time!

I did not vote for Olympia Snowe in 2006. The last time I voted for her was in 2000, but paying attention to her votes over the years since then has made me realize she doesn't give a flying rat's arse about the people of Maine or of this country. She will never get my vote again. She's a party loyalist.....and so is Susan Collins. They both are disgusting.

Derek, you're a Republican? Whoever would have guessed. Now we can see why the Republican party is losing members. Brian, I completely agree with you. I've supported Snowe ever since she first ran for Congress. Even donated money for her campaign. I though she believed the what the U.S. stood for but I can see now that freedom, liberty and morality means nothing to her. The damage to this wonderful country that she and all the others who have voted for this absurd law is unforgivable. Both she and Collins must go.report abuse
