Fairness Doctrine should
be revived for airwaves
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Recently right-wing radio host Laura Ingraham hit on a theme that other Republican propagandists have also been harping about recently, the "serious harm" that would be done if U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, has his way and the Fairness Doctrine is resurrected.

The Fairness Doctrine treated the public airwaves as a public resource and those who ran stations were "public trustees," thus they were responsible to provide opportunity for the presentation of contrasting points of view. This is precisely what Ingraham and other members of the right-wing radio juggernaut do not want to see happen, though bringing back the Fairness Doctrine would bring the issue full circle.

Abolition of the Fairness Doctrine by Ronald Reagan didn't have a lot to do with serving the public good, rather it was a political maneuver hatched by the Republican Party. It is indeed ironic that the party that created a right-wing talk radio monopoly ostensibly because the media wasn't "fair and balanced," outlawed the very mechanism that ensured this type of coverage for all sides.

Some cynics have suggested that Republicans want the ability to spew propaganda in the guise of news, giving rise to the deceit of Fox "Republican" News calling itself "Fair and Balanced" when objective analysis points to the opposite.

As for right-wing talk radio being "Fair and Balanced," Howie Carr calls Democrats "Moon Bats." OK, where's the Democratic response to Republican "leadership" on issues such as Iraq?

Bring back the Fairness Doctrine.

Taxpayer, you're full of crap. Show some evidence the the mainstream broadcast news sources are biased. And please, try to put it on parr with talk radio, where apparently you get your "news." Talk radio most certainly is biased, as the writer proves easily. Dan Rather's hamfisted handling of a negative George Bush story, one which otherwise had merit, got him canned. That gonna' happen to Carr over anything he says and purports as fact? Keep fooling yourself, pal, that's what your good at.report abuse

Be careful what you wish for. How far are you willing to go to get your message out? Are you prepared to accept a bunch of Alan Colmes clones sitting beside rock stars like Limbaugh, Beck and Savage... having to defend to kook side of every issue, political or not? The left will again make fools of themselves, just as we're witnessing with their failed Air America experiment. Now that's entertaining... in a Britney Spears train-wreck waiting to happen sort of way.report abuse

Perhaps the reason that right winged talk radio is so popular is because of the bias that most of the media blatantly spews forth every time they "report".

I mean, PLEASE!....MSNBC,CNN, ABC,CBS,NBC, and others are so far to the left it insults our intelligence.

Let me clue you in....that aint "reporting the news"...it is nothing more than pushing a one sided agenda.

Take your whine somewhere else.report abuse
