My family had an upsetting experience recently in a Waterville store. Our 3-year-old daughter has autism, a neurobiological disorder, and despite making remarkable progress over the past few months, had an unexpected "meltdown" while we were shopping. We do not knowingly place our child in situations that may overwhelm her.

Our child is no "spoiled brat." Her limited communication and socialization skills can make her behave in ways that few people understand.

Out of respect for children with autism, and other disorders, please do not be too quick to harshly judge such situations (with unpleasant looks, comments, stares, etc.). Please be patient while we teach our child how to function properly in the community.
