The Republican is opposed by Democrat Patricia Karush, 59, who teaches at Thomas College.
Karush was not available for an editorial board interview, but she did answer this paper's candidate questionnaire, giving us some insight into her positions.
Browne appears to be more active as a campaigner and has done an able job representing his district, where he has spent many years involved in local community issues and is widely known as Bill Browne.
We're gratified to see someone with Karush's credentials, which include a master's degree in business, challenging what appears to be an entrenched incumbent.
That said, our endorsement goes to Browne for his level-headed form of Republicanism, his dedication to his legislative and community responsibilities and for his positions on Maine's future.
Browne believes a common-sense reduction in taxes (especially the income tax) and targeted investments in research and education can be a successful formula, and we agree.
