York High School scored 1 minute, 30 seconds into the game on its way to a 4-0 win against Winslow on Saturday at the Clifford "Kippy" Mitchell Sports Complex. The Wildcats extended Western Maine's winning streak in the Class B title game to nine with its second championship in three years.
"Getting here, we can do that," Winslow coach Scott Wood said. "The teams in Western Maine are just at another level. We are not at that level yet and it is my job to get us to that level."
Winslow, the last Eastern Maine team to win a state title in 2000, finished 17-1-0. York (16-2-0) beat Winslow 2-1 in the 2007 championship game.
York's Emma Clark, one of the top players in the state, made an impact immediately and put Winslow in a hole it couldn't get out of.
Clark took a chip from Savannah Tapley down the left wing and dribbled into the Winslow penalty area. The Black Raiders converged on Clark and the Boston University-bound senior fed a wide open Ashley Taylor, who beat Winslow goalie Jessica Gordon less than two minutes into the game to make it 1-0.
"That put us in a hole and we played more defensive the rest of the half," Wood said.
Added York coach Wally Caldwell: "We scored right off the get go and we loosened up a little."
Winslow had very little success offensively in the first half and didn't get a shot on net. The Wildcats controlled the middle of the field and kept Winslow's leading scorers -- Alliyah Veilleux and Jordyn Mallett -- from creating any opportunities.
Meanwhile, Clark put constant pressure on Winslow and pushed the lead to 2-0 with 3:02 left in the half. Clark got the ball on the left side of the box and dribbled into the Winslow defense. Just as she started to cross the goal mouth, Clark took a shot to the near post and scored to give York a 2-0 lead.
"I knew that we had to get up by more than a goal at halftime if we really wanted to seal this thing off," Clark said. "If it was going to be me taking on 11 players and scoring a goal to do it, I was going to do it."
Winslow created a few more scoring chances in the second half, putting four shots on net, but couldn't create any constant pressure. As it did in the first half, York scored early in the second when Clark stole a clearing pass and ripped a shot into the back of the net less than five minutes in.
"Mr. Caldwell has pushed me to get up there and score," said Clark, who finished her senior season with 18 goals and 31 assists. "It is not my comfort zone. I like to pass and distribute and get everyone in the game, but he told me I had to shoot so that is what I did."
Emily Bauman scored with 51 seconds left for York. The Wildcats outshot Winslow 14-4.
"They have a pretty good passing game and they have pretty good players," Wood said. "They were always moving one, two, three things ahead of us and we played catch up most of the game."
Winslow graduates five seniors, including four starters. Mallett, Kim Curtis, Rachel Hall and Gordon all played their final game for the Black Raiders.
