It's been some time since either the Winslow or Waterville girls soccer teams have lost a game.
Both are hoping for two more victories to cap banner seasons, beginning with today's Eastern Maine regional championships. Unbeaten and second-seeded Winslow hosts No. 5 Caribou for the Class B regional title while No. 3 Waterville travels to No. 1 Brunswick for the Class A championship. Winners advance to Saturday's state championship games.
Defending Class A champion Waterville (14-1-1) came on strong after an early-season loss to Bangor and a tie against Messalonskee.
"After that happened the kids really came together," Waterville coach Ian Wilson said. "We were a different team after that. We played harder in games and practices."
The Purple Panthers later beat Bangor twice, including last week's 2-1 semifinal tournament win. They didn't play Brunswick (16-0-0) in the regular season but the teams met in the regional final last year, and Wilson saw the Dragons beat Bangor recently in the conference title game.
"It ought to be an interesting game," he said. "We play similar styles. Both teams like to control the ball on the ground."
The teams also feature two of the more prolific scorers in the state in Brunswick junior Allison Walton and Waterville junior Jordan Pellerin. Walton has scored around 30 goals for the Dragons while Pellerin broke Deb Cormier's school record last week with her 51st goal of the season.
Winslow (16-0-0) avoided a trip to Presque Isle today when Caribou (11-4-1) upset the No. 1 Wildcats last week. Last year, the Black Raiders lost 3-2 at Presque Isle in the regional final. Prior to that Winslow won four straight regional titles, and coach Scott Wood hopes that history has an effect on the visiting Vikings.
"We score the first goal and they think, 'It's here we go again,' for the teams we play," Wood said.
Caribou has a solid offense led by Jenna Selander and Olivia Sleeper, while Winslow relies on a couple of four-year starters in midfielders Jordyn Mallett and Kim Curtis, who each have 18 goals.
"Their roles have changed a little bit," Wood said. "They've done a nice job of allowing me to use them as building blocks."
Junior Lynsey Vigue and freshman Alliyah Veilleux have also added some scoring punch to the lineup.
"I think the big thing is we've got to finish," said Wood, whose team outshot Old Town 17-3 last week in a 1-0 win. "That was our biggest problem in the last game."
