Lindsey Prelgovisk had an impressive debut season for the Messalonskee High School girl's swimming team. Prelgovisk took a pair of individual third place finishes at the Class A state championships, and was a member of the Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay team that won the state title.

This season was just the prologue. Just a freshman, Prelgovisk is only going to get better.

For her efforts in helping Messalonskee to a third-place finish at the Class A state meet, as well as her New England championship in the 100 backstroke, Prelgovisk is the Morning Sentinel Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Along with the 400 freetyle victory at the state meet, Prelgovisk took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 3.78 seconds. She also placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:26.20) and helped the Eagles take second in the 200 medley relay. The Eagles finished three points behind second place Morse.

"I was very happy with how we did," Prelgovisk said.

Prelgovisk won the New England championship in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.25. At the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference meet, Prelgovisk took individual first place in the 100 freestyle (55.37) and 100 back (1:02.11), while helping the 400 freestyle relay team claim victory (3:51.77).

Messalonskee coach Amanda Delorie knew she was getting a strong swimmer in Prelgovisk.

"I had a vague idea, before I saw some times from her (club) races," Delorie said. "Once I saw her in the pool, it was obvious."

Prelgovisk already owns most of Messalonskee's school records. The only two she didn't grab this season were 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. It could just be a matter of time before she holds those records too, Delorie said.

"She has perfect technique in just about every stroke," Delorie said.

"Records aren't that big a deal to me. Most of the time, I'm just trying to improve my own time," Prelgovisk said.

Prelgovisk, who has been swimming competitively since she was 7, said the backstroke is her favorite event.

"It's my best stroke. I never get tired of it," Prelgovisk said. "I always love swimming it."

The freshman exceeded the goals she set for herself at the state meet.

"I knew there were some good girls competing," Prelgovisk said. "I was just hoping to make the top eight."

The relay title was especially gratifying to Prelgovisk and her teammates, Amanda Joy and Samantha Mathieu, also both freshmen, and sophomore Emily Clark.

"We have very fast girls on that team," Prelgovisk said. "We've been swimming together since we started."

Delorie sees a bright future for Prelgovisk and the other young Eagles.

"(Prelgovisk) truly still loves to swim," Delorie said.

"I just love the sport a lot," Prelgovisk said. "It keeps me active and athletic. It's always really positive."
