The Winslow High School boys hockey team will be without coach Corey Lessard for its showdown against Western B power Greely on Wednesday at Sukee Arena.

Lessard was ejected from a Dec. 23 game against Messalonskee. Maine Principals' Association rules state that a coach who is ejected must sit out the next countable game.

Assistant Josh Blaisdell will coach the Black Raiders (3-2-0). Blaisdell coached the Black Raiders for three exhibition games in the recent Maine High School Hockey Invitational.

"I didn't agree with some of the calls," said Lessard, whose team was whistled for 20 penalties against the Eagles. "It is what it is."

Added Blaisdell: "It's a tough situation. Hopefully, we'll learn from it and grow."

Winslow, the defending Class B state champs, will also be without defenseman Charlie Kriegel and forward Nick Bourgoin for the game.

Both players received five penalties against Messalonskee, which results in a one-game suspension, according to MPA rules.

The Winthrop-Maranacook girls team (1-5-0) lost goalie Ashley Marcellino to a knee injury, forcing coach Marc Fortin to fill the void with inexperienced players.

"It's been a little rough," he said. "We've had three games where we've had to dress someone who is not goalie."

Fortin moved Emily Vickerson, one of the team's top defensemen, into goal.

"That took her off the blueline so it was sort of a double whammy," he said.

Fortin added that Marcellino hopes to return next week.

MHW Hawks sophomore captain Connor Lacasse said the team had two goals this season.

"We wanted to beat Cony and Gardiner," he said. "We wanted to beat Cony and Gardiner this season because they are teams that are around us."

The Hawks defeated Cony 5-2 on Dec. 18, but lost to Gardiner 6-2 in the championship game of the Founders Cup tournament, although that game was an exhibition.

The Hawks and Tigers will play at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kents Hill School.

"We can't wait," Lacasse said. "The loss was actually good for us because this gives us all the motivation we need."

After starting the season 1-3-0, the Kents Hill boys team won four straight. The Huskies (5-4-0) defeated Brunswick School and Berwick Academy during the streak.

The Brunswick School game was a rematch of a New England Prep School Athletic Conference playoff first-round game last season, which the Huskies won 6-4.

"We've beaten some good teams," Kents Hill coach Larry Cockrell said.

The Huskies return from break Monday and will play the Pingree School on Jan. 9.

Gardiner senior Peter Caradonna will try skating as early as next week. Caradonna has been sidelined with a broken left leg and an ankle injury, suffered during the football season.

Caradonna originally was expected to miss most, if not all of, the hockey season.
