The Messalonskee boys soccer team graduated a number of players from a team that reached the Eastern A semifinals in 2007. The Eagles had one big-gun returning, Cam Omsberg, and the senior played a big role in Messalonskee's continued success.
Omsberg finished the season with 18 goals and 11 assists to help Messalonskee reach the semifinals for the second straight year.
"He had a fantastic year," Messalonskee coach Tom Sheridan said. "Cam was one of those go-to guys and he stepped up as a leader for us."
For his outstanding season, Omsberg has been named the Morning Sentinel Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Mt. Blue High School's Zac Conlogue and Ben Russell were also considered.
Thanks to Omsberg's overall solid play, Messalonskee was able to overcome the graduation of many significant players. The Eagles finished the regular season 9-3-2 and advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to Brunswick for the second straight season.
During his first three seasons at Messalonskee, Omsberg scored just 13 goals and had 14 assists. This season, Sheridan asked Omsberg to score more and he responded.
"I needed to be more of a goal scorer this season," Omsberg said. "We had a solid defense, so I looked to have an impact on the outcome by scoring."
Sheridan knew Omsberg had the skills to be a big-time goal scorer.
"Cam was always a very talented player," Sheridan said. "He has vision, creativity and he is very strong with the ball. He used all of those qualities this season to make us a better team."
By scoring, Omsberg was able to draw defensive players his way and feed teammates for crucial shots.
"This season, Cam showed his versatility," Sheridan said. "A lot of times, he set up game winners when he could have taken a shot."
Omsberg's highlight goal this season came on a free kick in the regional quarterfinals. He scored on that free kick against Edward Little to send the game into overtime. Messalonskee would eventually win in penalty kicks.
"I think you've got to work hard to stay at the top of your game," Omsberg said. "All of the seniors worked harder and set a good example for everyone to follow. Everything went well for us and we had a great year."
