FARMINGTON -- Erin Porter scored 21 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team to a 68-46 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Hall-Dale graduate Caitlyn Laflin added 12 points for the Beavers, while Belgrade native Ashley Busque added 11.
Laflin also grabbed 12 rebounds, while Winslow grad Amanda Byrne had four assists. Erica Davis had 20 points and 13 rebounds for UMPI.
Lyndon State 77, UMaine-Augusta 32: Marissa Baggarly scored 15 points to lead Lyndon State to its season-opening win, in Augusta. Naomi White and Jackie Wetzel each added 13 points for Lyndon State (1-0).Danielle White led UMA (2-2) with 12 points.
Men's basketball
Bowdoin 67, Colby 60:Artie Cutrone had 20 points for the Mules, but the Polar Bears used a late run to pull out a season-opening win. The Mules (0-1) led 58-53 with 5:13 left in the game after a Justin Sherman basket. The Polar Bears, though, went on a 14-2 run over the final 4:48 of the game to pull away. Sherman finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while first-year forward Kyle Donovan had nine points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots in 27 minutes of work. Mark Phillips paced Bowdoin (1-0) with 15 points.
UMaine-Fort Kent 72, UMaine-Augusta 64: Jimmy Lopez scored 23 points to lead all scorers as UMFK earned the win in Augusta. Othniel Hyliger added 12 points for UMFK (2-4). Moses Brathwaite led UMA (1-3) with 21 points while Deon Cheers had 15 and Dylan Hanscom 10.
Cross country: The Colby College women's cross country team increased its chances of earning a bid to the NCAA Division III championship with a fourth-place finish in the NCAA New England Cross Country qualifier. Middlebury and Williams automatically qualified for the NCAA tournament by finishing first and second, respectively. Cassie Knight finished 12th for Colby with a time of 23 minutes, 11.7 seconds over the 6,000-meter course. Katrina Gravel was 16th at 23:24.0 and Emma Linhard was 23rd at 23:42.0. The Colby men finished their season by placing 23rd out of 49 schools in the meet. Andy Maguire led the Mules with a 113th finish in a time of 29:03.3 over the 8,000-meter course.
Also Saturday: Winthrop native Nick Downing finished 70th with a time of 27:49.8 for University of Southern Maine cross country team at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships in Williamstown, Mass.
