STRONG FINISH: Mt. Blue High School's Melody Lam heads to the finish at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the University of Maine at Augusta trails. Lam finished first in the Class A girls race with a time of 20 minutes, 37.5 seconds. For complete results, see D7.
AUGUSTA -- Four individuals and four teams won titles at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference cross country championships Saturday afternoon. None rated as high on the "Wow!" factor as Abby Mace.

Mace, a freshman at Maranacook, set a course record of 19 minutes, 24.9 seconds. She won the Class B girls race by nearly two minutes, and finished more than a minute ahead of Mt. Blue junior Melody Lam, the Class A champion. Lam still dominated the Class A field, winning that race by 24.7 seconds.

Erskine junior Sam Seekins won the Class B boys race by 25.4 seconds, while Brunswick junior Will Geoghegan nosed out Morse's Jason Kaake in the Class A boys race by 8.9 seconds.

The Maranacook boys won the Class B team title, scoring 77 points while Medomak Valley and Belfast tied for second with 91 apiece. The Lewiston boys easily won the Class A boys race.

Brewer edged out Mt. Blue 60-66 to win the Class A girls crown. With Lam, Addie Cullenberg, Gwen Beacham and Shelby Aseltine, Mt. Blue had four finishers in the top 13 and actually had a better average time than Brewer. But the Witches placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 19 to eke out the win.

The Medomak girls squeaked by Leavitt 61-63 for the Class B win. Maranacook, Winslow and Waterville grabbed the next three spots.

Mace was simply amazing in the girls race, getting out in front early and never letting up. She led Lam, who was running a brilliant race herself, by 10 seconds before the race was a half-mile old.

"I made sure I kicked in the last 400 meters, and I tried to have fun while I was running, and I think I did that," Mace said.

Mace had no one pushing her during the race -- she finished 1:12.6 ahead of Lam and 1:48.9 ahead of teammate Taylor Burr, who finished second in Class B -- but said she has learned to push herself and stay calm at the same time.

"I stayed relaxed," Mace said. "I've found that if you stay relaxed, you can actually get a better time."

Lam finished the race in 20:37.5, and said the course was slower than she expected. Still, she easily beat her time of 21:22.5 at last year's KVACs, when she finished fourth.

"Basically, I just trained harder this year," Lam said. "With all the freshmen who are ridiculous, it's obvious that I needed to step it up a little."

Like Mace, Lam said she wasn't challenged during the race.

"Not really," she said. "I could hear footsteps sometimes. Abby was ahead of me, and she's Class B, so I was kind of just running by myself in the woods."

Seekins finished 18th in Class B at last year's KVACs, when he ran the course in 18:54.7. He said his goal was a time in the low 17s, and he hit 17:05.9.

"This year, I started doing a long run once a week," Seekins said. "I started running 10-plus (miles) every Sunday, and I think that's really made the difference."

Other top local finishers were Cony's Luke Fontaine (fourth in Class A boys), Mt. Blue's Kelton Cullenberg (sixth in Class A boys), Waterville's Mike Nelson (fourth in Class B boys), Cony's Morgan Beede (sixth in Class A girls) and Maranacook's Emily Harriman (sixth in Class B girls).

The Maranacook boys had no one in the top seven in Class B, but placed seven runners in the top 32. Junior Justin Greely was the top finisher for Maranacook, in eighth place, followed by Evan Longfellow (14th), Cam Best (16th), Sam Whittemore (17th) and Evan Vincent (22nd).

In Class A, Cony finished fourth and Mt. Blue was fifth. The Erskine boys were fifth in Class B.
