With Thursday night's 11-1 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A win, the Purple Panthers hope to have buried that memory.
"Last year, we came here and it was our only tie of the season, and we just wanted to get rid of that," said sophomore striker Jordan Pellerin, who had three goals and three assists in the victory against the Bulldogs.
"We don't really talk a lot about who we're playing, because we just go out and play our game. But we knew about this one."
Waterville (8-0-0) got things rolling early with Pellerin's first goal in the seventh minute, and from there she worked magic with cohort Steph Whitten to produce a quick-strike offense for most of the first half. Pellerin had a hand in five of the six first-half goals for the Purple Panthers.
Pellerin scored again in the 28th minute, opening up a 4-0 lead, in the meantime setting up goals from Whitten in the 23rd and 33rd minutes. She also assisted on the first of three Laura Tozier goals in the contest.
"I don't know what it is," Pellerin said. "Obviously, working with Steph, I don't even have to look up. We just know where each other's going to be. She's always willing to set up plays. She's not selfish, neither of us are. We just work good together."
Added Waterville coach Ian Wilson: "These girls now in our attack have played together for all of last season and this one. They just know each other so well. They know each other's habits, they read the defense really well.
"(Lawrence) was playing an offsides trap on us, really through a lot of the first half. Our girls have played together so much, they were able to read that and take advantage of it as the game went on."
Lawrence (4-3-0) tried to break the momentum in the second half, when fullback Sara Quimby went against the run of play and booted in a long shot from nearly 35 yards out on the left side in the 43rd minute.
Waterville answered with a goal only four minutes later from Tozier. Paige Gardiner (50th minute), Taylor Hart (53rd), Pellerin (71st) and Gardiner again (80th) scored before the end of the game, as well.
"We just seem to be in a rhythm offensively right now," Wilson said.
"They're not our measuring stick," Lawrence coach Jill Lathan said. "Our measuring stick is our girls, how we play and how we execute out on the pitch. We have to measure ourselves against ourselves, period."
