CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Colby College women's lacrosse season came to an end Saturday when the ninth-ranked Mules fell 13-6 to fourth-ranked Hamilton College in an NCAA Division III tournament regional semifinal.
Colby, the New England Small College Athletic Conference champs, finishes the season at 13-6. Hamilton will play an NCAA quarterfinal game at home at 1 p.m., today against either Middlebury College or Gettysburg College.
Becky Julian scored 4:25 into the first half on a free position shot to give the Mules a 1-0 lead. Julian, a first team all-NESCAC selection, finished with a pair of goals and ended the season with 49 goals and 21 assists for 70 points. The junior attacker heads into her final season next year with 93 goals and 32 assists for 125 points.
Hamilton (18-1) scored the next six goals to take command. The run started with Liz Rave's tally with 23:36 left and ended with a Sarah Bray score with 19:11 remaining.
Colby did fight back and made it 6-3 at halftime on goals by All-American Kate Sheridan and Kathleen Kramer. Sheridan, who had two goals, finished her record-breaking season with 58 goals and 33 assists for 91 points. The point and goal totals are both school records and she led the NESCAC in scoring. Sheridan, a junior midfielder and the NESCAC Player of the Year this season, has 147 goals and 62 assists for 209 career points in just 54 games.
The Continentals scored the first seven goals of the second half to pull away for good. Hamilton goalie Kate Fowler made nine of her 12 saves in the second half.
The Mules scored three goals in the last 2:58 of play on tallies by Sheridan, Julian, and Carrie Lovejoy.
Colby's two seniors, Lovejoy and Jamie Enos, both contributed in their final games. Lovejoy's goal gave her 48 goals and eight assists for 56 career points. Enos, an all-NESCAC first team pick, had three caused turnovers and three ground balls to finish as Colby's season leader in both categories at 28 caused turnovers and 39 ground balls.
Nicole Tetreault had four goals to pace the Continentals, while Kaillie Briscoe scored two goals and three assists.
Sarah Warnke made nine stops in goal for the Mules. Caroline Duke also had three ground balls for Colby.
