The Raiders returned to action with a Friday afternoon game against Mt. Blue High School, determined to get back to their winning ways. Things didn't look promising when the Cougars held a one-goal lead after the first period.
Attackmen Tyler Pomerleau and Nick Brown, however, turned things around and the Raiders used strong defensive effort to stop the Cougars. Oak Hill picked up a 10-4 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B win.
"The chemistry was good in attack," Pomerleau said. "Everyone got into the game and we were making good passes. The loss to Lincoln Academy was enough motivation to help us get ready for today."
Zach Provost ignited the attack for Oak Hill (4-1), picking up a loose ball in front of the Cougar goal and firing a quick wrist shot into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. Pomerleau followed with back-to-back goals and when Brown slammed home a hard shot from the right side.
"Oak Hill is an excellent team," Mt. Blue coach James Black said. "They worked the ball well and played exceptional defense.
"They are the best team we have played so far."
By halftime, Pomerleau had three goals and was controlling the attack on the offensive end. Running the offense, Pomerleau's strength and poise helped the Raiders maintain ball possession while putting together a series of combination passes to exploit the Cougars defensive game.
"I absolutely want to have the ball in my hands," Pomerleau said. "I like to settle it down and my teammates can take advantage of the situation because we all work together so well."
Although Mt. Blue did manage to narrow the gap to 5-3 at halftime on a goal by Lance Dwight with 18 seconds remaining in the second period, the Cougars never challenged the Raiders the remainder of the game Friday.
Defensively Mathew Averill, Tyler Michaud and Corey Stubbs turned the Cougars attack away consistently, leaving Mt. Blue launching an occasional long range shot in hopes of finding the target.
"The defense was on their game," Averill said. "Every long pole and short stick had a game."
Brown and Jake Girard pushed the Raider advantage to 7-3 in the third period.
Brown scored on a one bounce shot when Pomerleau sent his teammate in on the right side with 10 minutes, 4 seconds left in the third. At 8:45, Girard ripped a screaming shot into the Cougar net from 25 yards to put the game out of reach.
