LEWISTON -- Dominik Alexis was a little disappointed in his second-place finish in the high jump at the Class B track and field state championships Monday. He made up for it later in the day.

The Waterville Senior High School junior won the 55-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 7.86 seconds, then took second in the triple jump, beating his personal best in the event by two feet with a jump of 44 feet, 61/2 inches.

"I just pumped myself up by making up stories," Alexis said. "Like I was trapped in a cage and had to let go."

The Waterville boys placed third as a team with 50 points. Falmouth won its third straight indoor state title with 103 points, while Greely took second with 731/2 points.

The Greely girls won their seventh state championship in eight years with 86 points. Last year's champion Waterville was second (57), while Falmouth placed third.

Alexis won the 55 hurdles despite what he called a poor start.

"My start was messed up and that kind of actually helped me," Alexis said. "I had to move my legs faster to catch up with my body."

Alexis' last attempt in the triple jump was his best, and it gave him a short-lived lead. Falmouth's Tom Winger, the day's final jumper, hit 44-43/4 on his final try to win.

Don Clark of Winslow won the shot put with a throw of 50-7. It was the second state title for Clark, who won the outdoor crown last spring. Clark was seeded second in the event, behind Falmouth's Kristopher Floridino. "I like it better when I'm not seeded first," Clark said. "I like the old underdog role."

Waterville's Brad Loomis took first in the pole vault, with a vault of 12 feet. Sam Seekins of Erskine placed fifth in the mile at 4:50.83.

Injuries have kept Hall-Dale's Laura Peterson from triple jumping for more than a month. Still, she looked strong from her first attempt, winning the state title with a jump of 35-10. Peterson went 35-2 on both her first and third jumps, and while that would have been enough to take the win, she decided to go all out on her final try.

"My dad said I should scratch my last one, but I wanted to make a good jump and just go for it," said Peterson, who placed second in the long jump at 16-71/2.

Waterville's Kate Croswell moved up from her fifth seed in the 800 to take second with a time of 2:27.78. Croswell took the lead from Greely's Liz LePage as they began the final lap, but LePage overtook Croswell in the last 100 meters for the title.

Shelby Tuttle took second place in the triple jump (34-11) and 55 hurdles (8.87).

"When (Tuttle) was a freshman, she was 5-foot-nothing," Waterville coach Ian Wilson said. "I tried to talk her out of jumping and into distance."

Bethany Karter-O'Brien was second in the shot put for Waterville with a throw of 43 feet. Becky O'Brien of Greely set a state record in the event with a throw of 49-113/4. Erskine's Anna Niedbala was third (39-8), while Waterville's Danielle Fossa was fourth (38-41/2).
