SKOWHEGAN -- The Skowhegan Area High School field hockey team, which is gunning for its seventh consecutive state title, began the Eastern A playoffs with a 2-0 victory against Lawrence High School Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, top-seeded Skowhegan (14-1-0) got on the board when Kylie Damon deflected in a shot by Sam Gifford. The Indians' second goal came when Gifford was set up by Erin Sevey.

Skowhegan outshot the ninth-seeded Bulldogs 30-4 and had an advantage of 19-4 in penalty corners. The Indians had several shots go wide by less than a foot.

Megan Hancock made four saves for Skowhegan, which will host No. 5 Oxford Hills on Saturday. Jordan Carter had 10 stops for Lawrence (7-9-0).

OXFORD HILLS 2, MT. BLUE 1, PENALTY CORNERS: Kaitlin Crockett scored on the sixth round of penalty corners as the fifth-seeded Vikings outlasted the fourth-ranked Cougars in an Eastern A quarterfinal.

Kaitlyn Bullen gave Mt. Blue (9-4-2) the lead on a goal 6:42 into the second half. Crockett tied the score 3 1/2 minutes later.

The game went through two scoreless eight-minute overtimes before moving on to alternating penalty corners, where Crockett's goal ended the game.

Mt. Blue outshot the Vikings, 24-11. Amanda Deschenes made seven saves for the Cougars and Alexsys Pike had 13 for Oxford Hills (10-4-1).

CAMDEN HILLS 3, ERSKINE 0: Amanda Kava scored all three goals for the Windjammers, who took the Eastern B quarterfinal win in Rockport.

Dale Winsper made six saves for the shutout. Top-seeded Camden (12-2-1) will now play No. 4 Waterville on Saturday in the regional semifinals. Erskine ends the season at 3-11-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

MESSALONSKEE 1, EDWARD LITTLE 0: Kate Grenier scored with an assist from Hannah Jallette in the first overtime to give the Eagles the upset win in the Eastern Class A prelims in Auburn.

Chrissy White, Danica Wilson, Katy Smith Molly Sanborn, Kassie Bates had strong games at fullback for the Eagles. Eloise Douglass and Kate Bingham combined to make 10 saves for No. 10 Messalonskee (6-9-0). Danielle Morin had six saves for the Red Eddies (10-4-1).

The Eagles will play at 4 p.m. Friday at No. 2 Mt. Ararat.

WINSLOW 7, CENTRAL 0: Katie Caron scored four goals and assisted on another to help the No. 4 Black Raiders take the Eastern Class B preliminary round win against No. 13 Central.

Jill Smith, Liz Cheesman and Jordyn Mallett also scored for Winslow (14-1-0). Beth Fisher made one save for the shutout.

Jana Philbrick made 10 saves for Central (3-10-2). Winslow will play either Bucksport or Medomak Valley on Saturday.
