Staff Writer It's so big that for nearly 90 years, generations of young men tried to get it, and generations of people who wanted to see them get it experienced untold heartache at another missed opportunity. It's baseball's World Series trophy, and the one captured by the Boston Red Sox last October will be on display in central Maine today. The trophy -- weighing 33 pounds -- will be on display at the Maine Instrument Flight hangar at the Augusta State Airport from 9 a.m. to noon, and will later be displayed at Waterville Junior High School from 1 to 4 p.m. "The sites were chosen for availability," said Sarah Webster, a communications specialist at MaineGeneral Health. "We've gotten great cooperation from both sites." A busy day for the trophy concludes with an fund-raiser at the Harold Alfond Athletic Center on the campus of Colby College from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be auction of Red Sox memorabilia to benefit hospital cancer programs. Items up for bid include tickets to watch a game from the Green Monster and an opportunity to attend batting practice and meet Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino. Tickets are still available for the fund-raiser at a cost of $95 by calling 626-1809. The trophy was also on display at the Blaine House in Augusta on Dec. 18, and Gov. John E. Baldacci was on hand as hundreds of fans viewed and touched the trophy. Bob Papagno of Augusta was one of those fans, and said he would like to see the trophy again today. "It was something you thought you'd never see, and when you see it, it's hard to believe," Papagno said. "It was smaller than I thought, but it carries a lot of weight for a small item."
