Huskies sweep White Mules with minimal production

WATERVILLE -- The University of Southern Maine won the opener of Sunday's softball doubleheader at Colby with just one hit, then needed just one run to win game two and take the sweep with wins of 2-1 and 1-0.

Kristen McGovern scored both runs in the opener for the Huskies. She got the team's only hit in the fourth inning, stole second, moved to third base on a fielder's choice, and scored on a RBI groundout by Caterina Riitano.

Colby tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Wendy Bonner singled and scored on an error. McGovern reached on an error in the sixth inning, stole second and third and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Farmingdale's Chirsten Lachapelle.

McGovern scored the lone run in game two in the third inning, reaching base on an error and later scoring on a single by Riitano, who went the distance for her first win of the season.

Toni-Lynn Robbins allowed no earned runs taking the game two loss for Colby (5-7).

UMAINE-FARMINGTON 8-4, MT. IDA 0-1: At Newton, Mass., Norridgewock's Mary Berry drove in four runs in game one to lead UMF to a doubleheader sweep. Strong's Sara Martin added two hits and a run for the Beavers in game one. Martin had two more hits in game two, when UMF (7-2, 4-0) took advantage of four Mt. Ida errors.

Mt. Ida fell to 3-13.

MAINE 3, HARTFORD 2: Amy Kuhl hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the University of Maine softball team to a win over at Kessock Field in Orono on Sunday. Sarah Bennis pitched two shutout innings of relief to pick up the win for Maine (9-17, 4-1 America East). Lauren Dulkis and Candace Jaegge each had a pair of hits for the Black Bears.

BASEBALL

ST. JOSEPH'S 4-3, HUSSON 0-10: In Standish, Charlie Furbush threw a complete-game four hitter to lead the Monks to the win in game one of a doubleheader. Furbush struck out 10, while Bobby Webber of Augusta took the loss.

In game two, Husson (9-10) scored five runs in the sixth inning to take the win.

Jason Harvey drove in three for Husson. Derek McIntosh had three hits in game two for St. Joe's (10-7).

ALBANY 8, MAINE 6: The University of Maine baseball team saw its six-game win streak snapped with a loss to at Albany, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.

After spotting Albany (8-8, 1-2 America East) a 3-0 lead, the Black Bears scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Maranacook grad Greg Creek led off the inning with a double. Albany came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Creek pitched 52Ú3 innings for Maine (15-9, 2-1), allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Creek also scored a run.

Augusta native Ray Vallee had a base hit and drove in a run for the Black Bears.

WHEATON 16, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: At Gorham, Rob Cipolla had five hits, scored three runs and drove in three more to lead the Lyons to the non-conference win over the Huskies.

The Lyons jumped on top early, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning.

Brandon Brewer drove in both USM (10-5) runs.

Jamie Baker earned the win for Wheaton (14-5), while Sam Warner took the loss.
