Nokomis spring sports previews
Boys track
Coach: John White (6th season)
Last season: 10th in KVAC B
Top returners: Josh Hopkins (Sr., jumper, hurdles), Kevin Wilber (Sr., sprints), Shane Campbell (Sr., hurdles), Jonathan Barrows (Jr. thrower), Andrew Moontri (Soph., thrower), Stanley Prophete (Sr., sprints).
Key newcomers: Jeremy Higgins (Sr., jumps), Jordan Bailey (Fr., jumps), Tyler Harding (Sr., jumps)
Outlook: White says Higgins should score in four events, which will help a team that is down in numbers a bit. Higgins is returning to the team after not competing last year. Hopkins and Wilber qualified for the state meet last spring and are expected to pick up where they left off as well.
Coach's comment: "Our numbers are down a little bit. We've got some leaders coming back. Campbell got faster. Having Higgins back will help. We expect big things from Hopkis. I think we'll be able to compete fairly well, but the numbers will hurt a little bit."
Girls track
Coach: John White (6th season)
Last season: 11th in KVAC B
Top returners: Lindsey Bailey (Sr., sprints, jumps), Rebecca Wolinski (Jr., javelin, hurdles, jumps), Jennifer Hastings (Soph., jumps), Meaghan Taylor (Soph., sprints, jumps), Angela Dellaporter (Sr., throws), Kourtney Bradbury (Jr., throws), Hillary Platt (Jr., race walk)
Key newcomers: Brynn Cardozo (Fr.), Kerri Guesman (Fr., jumps)
Outlook: Bailey and Wolinski will pick up much of the scoring. Bailey finished 10th in the 100-meters and 200-meters at the Class B meet last season. Wolinski finished ninth in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet as well.
Coach's comment: "We have more boys than girls and that's the first time that's happened in a long time. We have kids who are here and are serious. We'll be OK. We have a lot of youth. Wolinski will be a big scorer. We had 12 freshmen girls come out, and that's a good number."
Softball
Coach: J.D. McLellan (6th season)
Last season: 10-8, made Eastern A quarterfinals
Top returners: SS Autumn Silke (Sr.), CF Erin Knight (Sr.), 3B/C Sammy Moore (Sr.), 2B Sabrina Vaillancourt (Jr.), OF Kori Mayo (Jr.), C Heidi Wyman (Jr.), C Sammy Richardson (So.)
Key newcomers: RF/P Jessica Kent-Webber (Jr.), P Kelsea Placey (So.), P Maria Adams (So.), OF Ally Manson (So.), UT Danielle Watson (So.), 1B Marissa Shaw (Fr.), UT Meghan Perry (Fr.), UT Janica Barrows (Fr.)
Outlook: This will be the Warriors' last season in Class A, and they lost starting pitcher Patrice Cianchette without another obvious ace waiting in the wings. McLellan said he's aware people are thinking Nokomis will have a down year, so he said it's crucial for the Warriors to ignore that and battle hard all game.
Coach's comment: "We lost some real intelligent players, which hurt. The girls all get along. They all work hard."
Baseball
Coach: Jared Foster (2nd season)
Last season: 2-14 in Eastern A
Top returners: John Long (Sr., OF), Derek Amoroso (Jr., P-SS), Mike White (Jr., 3B-C), Tyler Wintle (Jr., CF), Kelby Duplissea (Jr., OF), Rueben York (Jr., OF), Jared Semens (So., 1B-P), Dylan Savageau (Jr., OF)
Key newcomers: Justin Amoroso (Fr., 1B), Ethan Pearl (Fr., 2B), Cody Brawn (Fr., OF), Chris Braley (Fr., C), Dakota Bryant (Jr., P-1B), Dillon Harthorne (Jr., 3B), Antony Bourgoin (Sr., OF)
Outlook: This will be the final season in Class A for the Warriors, who drop to Class B next season. Derek Amoroso, a three-year starter, gives Nokomis a pitcher Foster feels can compete with anybody. Four freshman could be expected to contribute immediately.
Coach's comment: "I'm hoping to get rid of some silly mistakes in the outfield and a get a good solid nine I can count on."
