Madison High School fall sports previews
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Coach: Bob Hagopian (18th season)
Last season: 4th in MVC, 4th in Western C, 7th in Class C
Top returners: Gabby Savage (Jr.), Krysta Moulton (So.), Sierra Aubuchon (So.), Kasey Nickerson (So.).
Key newcomers: Lindsey Kandiko (So), Jessica Theberge (Fr.).
Outlook: Last season, Madison finished 13 points behind six-time champion Monmouth Academy at the MVC championship. The Bulldogs top runner last year, Sarah Kirkwood, transferred to Carrabec. Two solid pieces for the future are in place for the Bulldogs in Moulton and Savage. According to Hagopian, before injurying her foot early last season, Moulton was running as good as Kirkwood and Savage. The challenge for Madison will be to find a few other runners who can place high enough to give teams like Monmouth and Hall-Dale a run for their money.
Coach's comment: "We are young and got a good team attitude."

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Coach: Bob Hagopian (18th season)
Last season: 8th in MVC
Top returners: None.
Key newcomers: Divante North (So.), Matt McClintock (Fr.).
Outlook: Hagopian has been impressed with the freshman McClintock who has been running below the 20-minute mark in the first few practices. The coach hopes to recruit a few more runners once school starts.
Coach's comment: "We lost all our runners from last year. So, we will be starting over. I think both of the boys will be pretty good."

GIRLS SOCCER
Coach: Scooter Gleason (1st season)
Last season: 2-10-2
Top returners: GK Cecile Thibodeau (Sr.), D Kailynn McLaughlin (Jr.), F Alie Russell (Jr.), M Terry Hayden (Sr.), D Andrea Smith (Jr.).
Key newcomers: M Kelley Costa (So.), M Whitney Cowette (So.), M Kirsta Grant (So.), F Samantha McLaughlin (Fr.).
Outlook: Madison returns key players in important positions. With new leadership and a young group the Bulldogs will use this year to establish a foundation for the future while pursuing a possible playoff birth.
Coach's comment: "Everyone is excited about this years potential. The girls are looking to improve in all aspects of the game. The goals have been set and we are now working toward achieving them. With such a young group the future of Madison soccer looks promising."

GOLF
Coach: Heath Cowan (4th season)
Last season: 5-5, did not qualify
Home course: Lakewood
Top returners: Zack Sweet (Jr.), Brandan Boudreau (Jr.), Alex Casey (Sr.), Cody Richardson (Jr.), Brad Parker (Jr.).
Key newcomers: Seth Sweet (Fr.).
Outlook: The addition of Seth Sweet, the state junior champ for 13-14 year olds, should make the Bulldogs one of the teams to beat in the Mountain Valley Conference. Older brother Zack recently won the club championship at Lakewood, the team's home course. The progress of the team's remaining four players will ulimately determine Madison's success.
Coach's comment: "Toward the end of the year these guys will be pretty dangerous."

FOOTBALL
Head coach: Joe Hayden (5th season)
Assistant coaches: Tim Curtis (offensive and defensive lines)
Last season: 1-8 in Campbell Conference
Offensive leaders: QB/RB Sam Perkins (Sr.), C Jake Linkletter (Sr.), T Nico Barney (Sr.), HB Lucas Libby (Jr.), QB/HB Jeff Mercier (Jr.), HB Ivan Cobb (Jr.), G Zack Pooler (Jr.), WR Tucker Freeman (Sr.), G James Martin (Jr.), T Jake Curtis (Jr.)
Defensive leaders: S Perkins, DT Linkletter, DE Barney, S Libby, LB Mercier, LB Cobb, LB Pooler, CB Freeman, LB Martin, DT Curtis
Special teams: KR Libby, KR Perkins
Outlook: The Bulldogs are low on numbers, of the 31 players out for the team, 16 are freshmen. Either Perkins or Mercier will play quarterback. Linkletter and Barney are veteran leaders on both the offensive and defensive lines. Hayden feels the team's positive attitude will help lead to a successful season.
