Averill High School winter sports previews
Boys basketball
Coach: Gary Dugal (13th season)
Last season: 2-15 in Western D
Top returners: G Zach Morse (Sr., 5-9), C Randy Doak (Sr., 6-2), F/C Derek Cole (Sr., 6-2)
Key newcomers: G Bruce Linton (So., 5-7), G Noah Juliar (Jr., 5-7), F Richard Mahan (Jr., 5-10), G Josh Deschaine (Jr., 5-8), F Josh Brown (Jr., 5-9), G Ben Pearson (Jr., 5-7), G/F Devon Smith (Jr., 6-1)
Outlook: The Beavers return three players, although Cole will be out until mid-January with an injury. Morse and Doak have provided leadership in practice. As usual, Dugal will look to teach the game to his young team.
Coach's comment: "A lot them, this is their first time playing organized basketball."
Girls basketball
Coach: Elwood Copp (3rd season)
Last season: 2-15 in Western D
Top returners: G Dorothy Leighton (Sr., 5-5), G Savannah Castranda (Fr., 5-5)
Key newcomers: F Khristy Woods (Sr., 5-6), F Amber Allen (Fr., 5-6), G Casey LaPointe (Fr., 5-4), F Ashley Culhane (8th, 5-5), Shelly Linton (8th, 4-10)
Outlook: The Beavers are going to go as far as they can with effort. They're small and inexperienced, but have two fine athletes returning in Leighton and Castranda. Those two, Woods and Allen all played on the school's co-ed soccer team. Leighton had a couple 20-point games for the Beavers last season.
Coach's comment: "It's a very young team, but everyone's working hard."
