PITTSFIELD -- Earl S. Bickford, 99, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at a Pittsfield hospital following a short illness.

He was born in Pittsfield on Sept. 28, 1904, the son of Sumner and Edith (Emery) Bickford. He was educated in Plymouth schools. Earl worked as a weaver and fixer for the American Woolen Mills for several years and retired from Wrights Mill in Pittsfield at age 72.

He married Alice Watson Sennett in 1948 and they have celebrated more than 55 years together. Earl was an avid gardener, loved to walk, and also liked to play cards. He could fix anything and was always tinkering with something. When there was anything to fix in the neighborhood Earl could be counted on to be right there and have a hand in fixing it. He always had something from his family that he could fix for them and return it with a smile.

He was a 50-year member of the I.O.O.F. of Newport.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Bickford of Pittsfield; three daughters and their husbands Beverly and Dick Berry of Newport, Thelma and Cliff Vining of Newport and Verna and Laurice Sinclair of Pittsfield; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He will be also be remembered by a special niece and her husband, Irene and Ed Colson of Newport, and a special friend Violet Higgins of Pittsfield.

He was predeceased by his brother, Chester Bickford, and his sister, Bertha Tuttle.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport, with the Rev. Al Worden officiating. Burial will follow at the Pittsfield Village Cemetery. To sign and online guest book please visit: http://www.philipbrownfuneralhome.com
