NEW PORTLAND -- Jean Ritchie, 63, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at her home in New Portland.

She was born Sept. 14, 1941, in Patchogue, N.Y., the daughter of Edgar and Emma (Maklos) Ritchie.

Jean attended Patchogue High School in Patchogue, N.Y., and, after moving, graduated from Sachem High School in Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.

She moved from Long Island, N.Y., to New Portland in 1989.

Jean loved to watch the birds and hummingbirds, as well as work in her flower gardens. She was an avid reader and a devoted mother.

Jean is survived by two sons, Paul T. Hilenski Jr. of New Portland and Walter P. Hilenski of Brewer.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.
