ALPHONSO JOHNSON 1924-2005

Alphonso was born in Benton on Jan. 31, 1924, one of six children of Morris Alphonso and Addie (Perkins) Johnson. He was married to Clyde Helen (Brown) Johnson on May 23, 1945, in Albion, afterward becoming longtime residents of Albion. Throughout his life, Alphonso worked as a millworker, woodsman and farmer. He enjoyed gardening, especially raising his potatoes, proudly sharing his crops and his knowledge with anyone. He also enjoyed many years of tinkering, rebuilding and trading Model A Fords and other vehicles with his son, Ken. He was predeceased by his parents and four of his siblings. Alphonso is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Helen; and his three children, two daughters, Mary Cates and her husband, George, of Albion and Marie Chase and her husband, Darrell, of Palmyra, and a son, Kenneth Johnson of Albion; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Gertrude Quimby of Benton; as well as many nieces and nephews. At Alphonso's request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Albion, with a reception to follow. Condolences may be expressed at: http://www.lawrybrothers.com.
