Born in Lukow, Poland, she immigrated to the United States with her mother and grandmother in 1922, traveling the Red Star Line and entering this country through Ellis Island Immigration Center. Her family settled in Queens, N.Y. After high school, she became a milliner for Jay Thorpe Department store in Manhattan, N.Y., putting her talents to work making custom hats. She married her sweetheart, Andrew "Al" Brod, on New Year's Eve 1931, and they were happily married for 65 years until his death in 1997. They traveled the United States, finally settling in Mount Kisco, N.Y., where they raised two children. Anne was an intrepid volunteer for many organizations, including her temple sisterhood. She was known for her kind heart and talented and helping hands, and for helping others who were less blessed than her family. For many years, Anne and Al spent wonderful summers at their waterfront camp on East Pond in Smithfield, Maine. For the last eight years, she lived in Durham, both at Emerald Pond and with her daughter and son-in-law. She is loved and will be missed by her daughter, Barbara Germino, and son-in-law Victor Germino of Durham; her son, Steven Brod, and daughters-in-law Dawn Brod and Mady Brod of Industry and Smithfield; her granddaughter Laurie Merritt and grandson-in-law Robert Merritt of Chapel Hill; granddaughter Emily Brod of Portland, Maine; grandson Michael Germino and granddaughter-in-law Kelly Germino of Durham; grandson Ryan Brod of Smithfield; grandson Greg Germino of Saxapahaw; great-granddaughters Talia Williamson of Chapel HIll and Abigail Germino of Durham.
