CHINA -- A local man is facing multiple charges after allegedly punching a sheriff's deputy.

Clarence William Hannan Jr., 64, of South China was charged with assault on an officer and refusing to submit to arrest, Deputy Mathew Cain of the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department said.

Hannan also is charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing, theft and criminal mischief. He was being held at the Kennebec County jail Friday on $1,000 cash bail.

Kennebec County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Pion, whom Hannan allegedly struck, was not injured, Cain said.

The deputies were called to the China Dine-ah on Lakeview Drive around 8:30 a.m. Friday after Hannan was rude and disorderly, Cain said. Hannan refused management's request to leave, Cain said.

Hannan allegedly threatened a restaurant employee while deputies were en route, Cain said.

Hannan was charged with theft because he went behind the restaurant's bar and made himself a drink, Cain said. Hannan was not intoxicated, Cain said.

The deputies tried to convince Hannan to leave, Cain said. When those attempts failed, the deputies tried to remove Hannan, at which point he struck Pion in the face, Cain said.

"Once he struck Deputy Pion, the scuffle lasted maybe seven seconds and (Hannan) was handcuffed and under arrest," Cain said. "We're both OK."

Hannan was not hurt but as a precaution was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Cain said. Hannan was checked and taken to jail.
