No one was injured in the fire that destroyed an unoccupied mobile home on Embden Pond Road, but the Office of the State Fire Marshal has determined the fire was intentionally set, said Sgt. Ken Grimes with the state agency.
Firefighters from North Anson, Anson, Madison and Starks responded to the report of fire at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"When we arrived on scene, it was fully involved," said John Mullin, deputy chief of the North Anson fire station. "It was a defensive attack. There wasn't much left to save."
Firefighters knocked down the flames in about half an hour, said Roger Lightbody Sr., Madison's fire chief. But workers remained on scene for nearly three hours, leaving around 12:20 a.m.
"The roof is still standing, but it's not structurally sound," Mullin said. "It's completely gutted on the inside. It was a fairly old trailer."
The home's owner, of North Anson, was not at the scene, Mullin said, and was not contacted until after the fire.
Investigators from the state fire marshal's office examined the scene Tuesday night and then returned to North Anson Wednesday to talk to witnesses, Grimes said. As of late afternoon Wednesday, no charges had been filed in the case.
The fire marshal's office declined to reveal how the fire started.
Grimes did not know the value of the mobile home. Fire personnel did not know the name of the homeowner.
Emergency medical services from Anson, Madison and Starks were also on scene. The Starks Fire Department remained on standby at the Anson fire station in case of other fire reports, Starks Fire Chief Julie Costigan said.
Investigators ask that anyone with information about the fire call them at 626-3870.
