WATERVILLE -- People will gather Saturday to take an aerial photograph at Colby College, as part of the largest global day of climate action ever, according to information provided by Colby's Environmental Coalition.

The photo, which will be taken at 2 p.m. on Miller Lawn, will be followed by a potluck in the Pugh Center. People are invited to bring food. There will be a pumpkin carving and a video shown in Cotter Union.

The event is one of more than 2,000, in more than 140 nations, and is coordinated by the international campaign 350.org to urge world leaders to take action on global warming.

The environmental coalition plans to take a photograph from the Miller tower of a crowd of people in the shape of the number 350.

The campaign is collecting photographs of depictions of the number 350 from everywhere in the world Saturday. The number comes from the 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide that is the safe upper limit for the atmosphere, according to scientific data.

"We are hoping to get a big crowd together, so we can make this picture really epic," wrote Sarah Sorenson, the president of the coalition.

Simultaneously, people all over the world will take similar action, from climbers with "350" banners on the slopes of Mount Everest, to government officials in the Maldive Islands holding an underwater cabinet meeting.

Photos from the event will be available at http://enviro co.wordpress.com/ and at http://350.org/media.
