CLINTON -- A company that manufactures machines for the metal-working industry has laid off workers, the general manager acknowledged Wednesday.
Robert Evans declined to say how many workers have been laid off at Formtek, which had employed up to 100 at its Hinckley Road plant.
"Like most companies, we're seeing the impact of the poor economy," Evans said.
Word of the Formtek action comes on the heels of news that Sappi Fine Paper laid off an undisclosed number of salaried employees at its Somerset Mill, not far from Formtek.
Orders are down, but Evans declined to say by how much.
"That's proprietary," he said. "We're optimistic that we're going to see some orders come in."
Evans declined to specify if the workforce reductions would affect the plant's day or night shift more. Formtek does not operate around the clock, he said.
Machines that manufacture office furniture and appliances are among Formtek's products, Evans said. The Clinton Formtek factory is the only one in Maine.
The company is based in Westfield, Mass.
