The force of the impact tossed the minivan being driven by Gilbert Coppersmith, 71, of Augusta onto its roof. Coppersmith was able to disengage his seat belt and climb free before rescuers arrived.
The driver of the second vehicle, Francis Morin, 58, of Fairfield, was not injured.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. as Morin was heading south in his 2005 Chevy pickup on Church Hill Road. Morin was passing through the intersection at Route 105, planning to continue south on Cony Road, when his truck was struck by Coppersmith's 1997 Chevy Venture, which was heading east on Route 105, said Officer Christian Behr of the Augusta Police.
"It appears the minivan struck the (passenger side) rear of the pickup truck as the pickup truck passed through the intersection," Behr said.
He is unsure which driver had the green light. The investigation is ongoing, Behr said.
Traffic was diverted for about 30 minutes as police investigated and cleared the wreckage.
Coppersmith's minivan was destroyed. Morin's truck sustained about $2,500 damage.
Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash and no charges are anticipated.
"I'm very satisfied they were both wearing seat belts," Behr said. "Mr. Coppersmith, because he had a seat belt on, didn't sustain any injuries."
