In addition, all school students are to be released early today and all sporting events have been postponed following the death of Faith McKenzie, 38, a Bingham mother of three school children and wife of SAD 13 Director Joey McKenzie, Smith said.
Faith McKenzie was killed Friday evening on U.S. Route 201 in Madison when an oncoming Dodge pickup truck moved into her lane and struck her Subaru nearly head-on.
"We've canceled the meeting -- we've had a death in the community," Smith said. "We're going to close all the schools at 11:30. The funeral is Tuesday.
"We've canceled all other events around the school and we've canceled all sporting events."
Madison police said the pickup truck driven by Charles Sinclair, 59, of Cornville, was heading south, about a quarter of a mile north of the intersection of Route 148 at Clough's Corner when the accident happened. The Subaru was traveling northbound.
Sinclair received minor injuries.
The momentum of the crash flung both vehicles into a field on the east side of the road, where they came to rest on their wheels, according to a published report of the accident.
There were no passengers.
A reconstruction team is working to determine what caused the accident.
Madison Police Chief Barry Moores said laboratory tests are being performed to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor, as required by law in a fatal motor vehicle accident.
Smith said Upper Kennebec Valley High School in Bingham was opened on Sunday for people to come and be together in light of the tragedy. Schools were in session Monday.
He said members of the SAD 74 crisis team from neighboring North Anson were in Bingham on Monday to help staff and students cope with the grieving process. SAD 13 and 74 are a combined administrative district for one year in an interlocal agreement approved by the state this past summer.
Smith said the crisis team coming to Bingham is a good example of how school districts can share services in a time of need.
The funeral service for Faith McKenzie is set for 2 p.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church in Moscow.
