ANSON -- The driver of a 1996 GMC pickup truck suffered a severed foot late Thursday after the vehicle he was driving went off the road and struck a guardrail on Route 148, police and fire officials said Friday morning.

Lt. Donald Pomelow, commander of Maine State Police Troop C barracks in Skow-hegan, said Matthew Davis, 25, of Madison, the driver, was charged with operating after suspension.

A passenger, Tanya Staples, 35, of Jay, apparently was not injured, Pomelow said.

The truck is registered to Richard Mullen, 25, of Oakland, who was not in the vehicle.

Davis suffered head injuries and a severed foot, Pomelow and Madison Fire Chief Roger Lightbody Sr. confirmed.

Both the Somerset and Franklin county dispatch centers were handling calls on the accident, trying to determine the exact location of the single-vehicle crash, Pomelow said.

Reports show the accident happened at about 11:20 p.m. on a section of road known as Weeks Mills in the Somerset County town of Anson.

Lightbody said Madison fire and rescue, along with Anson units and the local ambulance service, responded and later set up a command post at Madison High School, where a landing zone was established for a LifeFlight helicopter.

Lightbody said the victim was cut from the wreckage with use of hydraulic extrication tools.

The victim reportedly was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

A spokeswoman at the hospital said Friday afternoon that Davis was in fair condition, but would not elaborate on his injuries.
