The accident and emergency vehicles blocked traffic on Front Street for about 20 minutes Thursday afternoon.
The motorcyclist, Kenneth Ainsworth, 58, was traveling in a straight line in the left-hand lane when a Scion driven by 36-year-old Matthew Fritze of Portland turned left in front of him, Waterville Police Officer Michael Sellar said.
Fritze had been traveling in the right-hand lane of Front Street and did not see Ainsworth when he cut across the his lane to turn into Joka's parking lot, Sellar said. Unable to stop in time, Ainsworth struck the Scion and overturned in the roadway around 1 p.m.
"He was conscious," Sellar said of Ainsworth. "It didn't look serious ... but there was quite a bit of road rash on his right side."
Sellar said medics took Ainsworth to a local hospital to be examined for a possible spinal injury. The damage to either vehicle appeared to be minimal, although the motorcycle was leaking gas. No citation will be issued, Sellar said.
"It was just an accident," he said.
