WILTON -- With very little discussion and no hesitation, the Wilton Planning Board voted 7-0 to grant a use permit to the new operators of the Sweden House Bed and Breakfast in East Wilton.

Cousins Addie Worthington, of Ontario, Canada and Ruth Junkins, of Los Angeles, California, made the move to Maine to carry on the Sweden House Bed and Breakfast tradition.

Junkins' and Worthington's grandmother, Vera Bergman, had operated the Sweden House and Gift Shop since 1953.

The women have yet to set an opening date. They plan to operate it as a traditional bed and breakfast, Worthington said.

"We are really just feeling things out," Worthington said. "We may reopen the gift shop way, way in the future when we see how far the money goes."

Paul Montague informed the board that because of the age of the building, he felt compelled to do a thorough inspection.

"I was pleased. This house is beautiful," Montague said. "I was impressed with the fact that all of the windows met fire safety evacuation standards."

Montague said the only part of the house not meeting fire safety standards was two rooms on the third floor.

The use permit was granted conditioned upon those rooms not being rented until such time that they do meet safety standards.
