"The bike was under the passenger side front tire and he was under the tire," Skowhegan Police Officer Don Avery said of the 4:49 p.m. accident.
Janet Wheeler, 36, of Skowhegan who was driving the 2006 Dodge Durango, appeared very shaken by incident.
"I'm just glad he's going to be all right," she said.
Officer Paul Fermo said that when he got to the scene, the car was over the boy: "He was hurting, that's for sure."
The name and age of the victim, who was taken to the hospital by ambulance, were unavailable. Avery said he expects the young man may have broken bones. He said the father arrived at the scene and told police they had just moved to town and were unfamiliar with busy traffic areas.
Avery said it appeared the cyclist was southbound on the sidewalk on the east side of the road when Wheeler pulled from the store parking lot and they collided. Randy Wright, who owns the grocery store, told police he had stopped at the store to get some food before going home. He said he had said hello to Wheeler and saw her pull to the white line, stop and look up and down the road before pulling out to turn right.
"I just saw the nose of the bike winging right down on her," Wright said. He told police that a group of young boys on bikes earlier in the day had been told twice not to play in the parking lot.
