The opponent, Lake Region, was the same. But unlike last year when Waterville needed overtime to win the title, the suspense in Friday night's game was gone shortly after the third quarter began. Waterville scored eight straight points to start the second half and pulled away for a 54-35 victory at Bangor Auditorium.
Morgan Frame scored 14 points for Waterville, which became the first team to win back-to-back Class B girls state titles since Mt. Desert Island won three in a row from 2001-2003. The Panthers finish 22-0 to run their winning streak to 44 consecutive games.
Waterville won the state title last year with a 52-51 win over the Lakers. Lake Region has played in three state championships games, losing all them all.
Jen Nale added 12 points, Steph Whitten had 10 and Sarah Given added nine for Waterville. Renee Nicholas scored a game-high 16 points for Lake Region, which finishes at 19-3.
Nicholas scored nine straight points in the first quarter as Lake Region took a 14-5 lead. But the lakers got in foul trouble, and Waterville stayed out of it, and the Panthers stormed back to take a 21-20 lead by halftime.
Waterville began the third quarter with eight straight points -- the last three on a long-range shot from the corner by Given -- and was never seriously threatened after that.
