Philanthropist to aid more Iraqi students at Thomas

WATERVILLE -- The idea that began with Iraqi student Dan Azad has grown into a scholarship fund that will bring a series of young Iraqis to study at Thomas College.

College administrators are still working out the details, but New York philanthropist Paul Schupf plans to fund a program that will extend beyond Azad's four-year enrollment.

Schupf had the idea to pay for Azad's education and trip to the United States after viewing an ABC News broadcast that profiled the young Iraqi.

The New York investor started the effort by calling Thomas College President George Spann within minutes of the broadcast.

"Thomas is the perfect place in a perfect town," Schupf said of his choice. "It's a blue-collar town ... and it's an excellent place where somebody new's not going to stand out."

Schupf said Thomas College's relatively small campus would provide a less intimidating environment than other colleges. The much-publicized journey, which required the help of U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, ABC News, developer Joseph Boulos and, of course, funding from Schupf, ended with a happy arrival on the ice-bound Thomas College campus on March 3.

"Dan may be the happiest fellow on campus right now," Spann wrote in a letter to Schupf. "He is acclimating well and making numerous friends."

While the media's glare has hardly left Azad, Schupf has stayed clear of it from the beginning. Schupf, 69, serves as president of Paul J. Schupf Associates, a private investment firm in Hamilton, N.Y., and holds honorary doctorates from both Thomas and Colby colleges. His name appears on several buildings and fixtures on the Colby College campus as a result of his donations, yet in Maine his name has rarely surfaced in print.

That's fine with him, Schupf said.

"It's really not about me at all," he said. "It's about Dan. And it's about the idea."

Schupf describes himself as a "fanatical art collector" who specializes in Alex Katz, an American artist who studied in Skowhegan and spent summers in Lincolnville. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Schupf said he acquired an international perspective through extensive travel, so deciding to make it possible for a promising Iraqi student to escape the chaos in Baghdad was a natural move for him.

The war in Iraq was a poor idea that has been badly executed, Schupf said.

"I'm violently opposed to the war because ... colonialism is not going to work in the 21st century," he said.

Schupf said he spoke to Azad briefly on the phone for the first time just days ago. The teenager at the time was traveling on a bus to see a Celtics game in Boston.

"He was very easy to talk to; he was pleasant and lively," Schupf said. "And that's why he's here -- he charmed Dan Harris at ABC and everybody who watched it. He's a terrific kid."

Wendall...(with the last name that I know people with!up here...:)

Ya...but did you see that that 'other oddity' terrorist has now admitted to doing this, that and every other thing...on the news tonight? Sounds like he is trying to get Bin Laden 'forgiven' or something.

PS...don't drink any longer! So you'll have to do that part alone...I also agree that the laptops are/were an excellent idea...from practicality, my perspective. We live miles from my sons' high school...no computer at home those half dozen+ years ago...what a challenge it was to work...drive 15 miles to get them after school, after work, in the snow, rain etc., all because assignments had to be done with computers! Oh...and drive home...another dozen miles!

Yes, Falmouth, one of my favorite places at this time as I have a baby grandaughter down there whom I love very dearly! Nice town...nice drive down I-95 from here. Straight shot.

Taxes are horrid down there, though..

My wild turkeys will handle Bin Laden if he ventures up this way...he'll be a sorry terrorist. They are ugly dudes, those turkeys!

Eliza the Enlightener!

My taxes are actually quite high, thank you! We have excellent schools and amenities here in Falmouth. As a matter of fact-I'd say that Falmouth has the best school system in the state. We think things like laptop computers are a great idea and we're willing to pay for them. I don't know what any of that has to do with your war criminal president-maybe if I had a few cocktails, you and I would be on the same page! I'll make sure to check under the bed for Osama Bin Ladin before I turn out the lights! He's still on the loose ya know.report abuse

My comments (and what was not said) have somehow become construed to sound like I don't support our troops, and that I'm a liberal! Neither of these assumptions could be farther from the truth. First of all, I served my country for 14 years of active duty in the Air Force. I love and admire all of our troops - past, present, and future! I also classify myself as a conservative and have voted that way my entire adult life. I do not, however, support Mr. Bush in his running of this war, which in my humble opinion is a total fiasco!

You'll also note that Mr. Schupf is not American-born. He has a great worldly view, and knows that sponsoring these Iraqi students will do just as much good for the future of Iraq as our troops are doing.

Is there inequity in the accessibility of grants and scholarships for college-bound student? Yes, probably there is. Do American students have better opportunities to go to college than Dan Azad – you bet!

So I ask all of you who wanted to pigeon hole me as a hippie liberal – are you so close minded to not believe Mr. Schupf’s generosity is not a good thing?report abuse

Eliza has enlightened us! bush killed hundreds of thousands of people and spent 300 billion dollars so that iraqi women can show their faces! Eliza the Enlightener! I was starting to think that this whole thing was a waste of life and money! Saudi Arabian women can't drive so maybe we should bomb them back to the stone ages next! report abuse

No one from there should be here. All countries that harbour terrorists should not be allowed here. This is a fiasco and the after effects here in America in the poverty created, the crime and mental suffering of our brave soldiers will afflict this country a lot longer then democracy will ever be kept in the Middle East. As soon as the troops leave there, the next Saddam will be in power within the month. Muslims LOVE war and murder, and democracy will never rule there. Our troops should be here securing America against these murdering SOB's. It is not AMERICAs place to fight their civil war. It is our duty to keep them out of our country, not bring them here and pay for their education so they can become the next BinLaden. If this "philanthrapist" wants to sponser terrorists, let him go to IRAQ to live. We need to educate our own.report abuse

KS...you will probably live to eat your words...'Some Bushy will never see what he has done to this country and the rest of the world by making us less safe in this Iraq fiasco!'

When that terrorist comes a-knockin' on your door! Continue wearing your blinders...you'll be one less person (disbeliever) for our soldiers to have to defend!

Ignorance truly breeds bliss...try not to get too blissful. Hmmmm?

Good for this man. It is his money to do with as he sees fit. Comments that it is wrong to give this to anyone other than Americans is none of these peoples business.

'It's nice to hear something good for the Iraqi people come out of this fiasco of a war.'

Ron: Many 'Something nices' have come out of this war: (if you can wrap your liberal mind around that)

A couple:

Women can show their faces now...no burqua's required!

Little girls can attend school now. (perhaps you would prefer that they NOT...if you are male-dominant)

FREEDOM! A word Bush obviously understands. The introduction of freedom, pure and simple ---into this country full of Muslim males who are truly and bluntly ignorant, to say the very least--- by America and her allies...will go far in keeping terrorism away from your doorstep...my doorstep. OPEN YOUR EYES! We MUST stop it where it festers most. THERE...not here.

Go to just one of the many online blogs and read just what our soldiers are doing every day... and accomplishing in their daily interaction with Iraqi's. Much positive stuff.

I would suggest that you support the troops...not denigrate their courage and daily sacrifices by calling what they are accomplishing a 'fiasco...'

Seeing an Iraqi woman in their governmental meetings? Speaking out for her country? for the first time ever? NOT the result of a 'fiasco.' Instead, I would call it the result of a man who had enough courage to take the word FREEDOM and put it into action...and troops who care enough to do what is right.

IF we do not stop terrorism where it begins...it will come TO us..to you and me..right in our back yards. What then will YOU do? Will you go out and offer flowers for peace? Methinks you'll run hard and fast for the nearest shelter manned by soldiers and tuck your little butt inside.

I think you, and all like you, are gutless...outspoken flowerpower children who never grew beyond potsmoking and childish attitudes...

This president has guts. I care not what you
think, nor do other thinking and sensible adults who grew up among the hippies who now spout their immature and senseless rhetoric.
