Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel Friday, July 27, 2007

I, Abbe Chabot, a law enforcement officer of the Maine State Police, being first duly sworn, do hereby depose and swear that I have probable cause to believe, and do believe that: JOHN A. OKIE, DOB 08-30-1986 152 West Old County Road Newcastle, ME 04553

I Height 5’10” Weight 180 Hair: Blond Eyes: Blue R: White

I Has committed the crime of MURDER. The basis of my probable cause is as follows:

I 1. JOHN S. OKIE SR. 02/14/48 was found deceased at his residence at 153 West Old County Road in Newcastle by his wife KAREN OKIE 3/14/53 and son JOHN A. OKIE 08/30/86 shortly before 10:00 p.m. on July 16, 2007. A 911 call was made to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 9:59 p.m. on July 16, 2007. The 911 call contained information from KAREN OKIE about coming home with her 20-year-old son to find JOHN S. OKIE deceased and lying in a pool of blood. KAREN further advised a 911 dispatcher that her son came and picked her up after he had gotten into an argument with JOHN S. OKIE. KAREN said there was no need for an ambulance as JOHN S. OKIE was clearly deceased.

I 2. Dr. Greenwald of the Medical Examiner’s Office later arrived at the residence at 153 West Old County Road in Newcastle and confirmed JOHN S. OKIE died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

I 3. JOHN A. OKIE advised State Police Detective Christopher Tupper he was home most of the afternoon of July 16, 2007. JOHN A. OKIE advised he left the residence during the afternoon for approximately one and one-half hours to obtain a newspaper in Boothbay, and then came home and slept until approximately 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. JOHN OKIE advised Detective Tupper his father came home shortly thereafter to mow the lawn. JOHN A. OKIE said he and his father then got into an argument, and JOHN A. OKIE said he then left in a rampage at approximately 9:00 p.m. to pick up his mother. JOHN A. OKIE said they then went home and found JOHN S. OKIE dead.

I 4.. JOHN A. OKIE advised Detective Christopher Tupper he never went beyond the staircase of the residence near the mudroom when he and his mother returned home to find JOHN S. OKIE deceased, therefore there would be none of his father’s blood on his clothing or person. JOHN A. OKIE advised he did shower earlier in the day, but was wearing the same clothing he had worn all day.

I 5. I interviewed KAREN OKIE at 153 West Old County Road. KAREN advised me JOHN A. OKIE was at the family residence most of the day on July 16, 2007.

I 6. KAREN advised her husband JOHN S. OKIE took her vehicle from Sheepscot River Pottery sometime around 6:00 p.m. on July 16, 2007, to return home and prepare dinner for the family.

I 7. KAREN OKIE stated that she received a phone call from JOHN S. OKIE at approximately 8 p.m. and was told her son JOHN A. OKIE would pick her up at Sheepscot River Pottery and bring her home. KAREN said JOHN A. OKIE arrived to pick her up later than expected at perhaps 8:30 or 9:00 p.m., but offered no explanation for his tardiness.

I 8. KAREN OKIE advised the pair arrived at the family residence and entered the home through a mudroom/entryway. KAREN advised JOHN A. OKIE remained in the mudroom while she went down a hallway and around a staircase where she observed JOHN S. OKIE deceased on the floor. KAREN said she checked JOHN S. OKIE, stated he was clearly dead, and called her parents who told her to make a 911 call. KAREN said she did so and she and JOHN A. OKIE held each other on the floor of the mudroom until the police arrived. KAREN said at no time did JOHN A. OKIE enter the home beyond the mudroom/entryway. 9. Detective Christopher Tupper and I interviewed KAREN OKIE’S friend JEFFREY SANDNER 08/28/54

I JEFFREY advised he received a phone call from KAREN OKIE at Sheepscot River Pottery at 8:58 p.m. on July 16, 2007. JEFFREY said KAREN asked him to give her a ride home because she had just spoken to her son JOHN A. OKIE via phone and said KAREN told him she could hear her husband moaning in the background during the phone call. JEFFREY SANDNER advised KAREN also told him JOHN A. OKIE and JOHN S. OKIE were having an argument.

I 10. State Police Evidence Technicians conducting a search of the crime scene at 153 West Old County Road in Newcastle located a gray plastic bag of clothes on a dining room table adjacent to both the kitchen and the living room areas of the residence. These clothes were blood-stained, as was a knife located at the bottom of the bag. A fingerprint of the inside of the plastic bag was confirmed by Maine State Crime Lab Forensic Scientist CINDY HOMER as that of JOHN A. OKIE.

I 11. On July 24, 2007, Jennifer Sabean, Forensic DNA Analyst at the Maine State Crime Lab, advised she tested a swab of the blood-stained knife located in the gray plastic bag. Jennifer Sabean advised a DNA profile of the blood on the blade of the knife matched JOHN S. OKIE. The estimated probability of selecting an unrelated individual from the FBI population database having that same DNA profile on the knife blade is 1 in 17.9 quintillion.

I 12. On July 24, 2007, Jennifer Sabean tested a swab of epithelial cells on the unstained handle of the same knife. A mixture of DNA profiles was obtained from this swab consistent with the DNA profiles of JOHN S. OKIE and JOHN A. OKIE. Based on the FBI Caucasian Database, it is estimated 1 in 1.898 billion people is a potential contributor for this mixed DNA profile.

I 13. On July 24, 2007, Jennifer Sabean obtained a DNA profile from cuttings of human blood-stained teal T-shirt and a human blood-stained black T-shirt, both found in the gray plastic bag on the dining room table of the OKIE residence. These DNA profiles match the DNA profile of JOHN S. OKIE.

I 14. On July 24, 2007, Jennifer Sabean obtained a DNA profile obtained from a swab on the collar of the above-mentioned teal T-shirt. This DNA profile is consistent with a mixture of the DNA profiles of JOHN A. OKIE and JOHN S. OKIE.

I 15. On July 24, 2007, Jennifer Sabean obtained a DNA profile from a swab of the collar of the above-mentioned black T-shirt, which matches the DNA profile of JOHN A. OKIE.

I DATED: 7/26/07 Signed by Det. Abbe Chabot

Right, move along, nothing to see. Just a broken child and adolescent mental health system; police departments that failed to communicate about John A. Okie's alleged first murder, thereby allowing him time to kill his father; and a justice system that requires a charade of innocence in an attempt to get this seriously ill young man anything approaching humane treatment for the rest of his life....Right, move along, folks.report abuse
