FULL HONORS: The Farmington Fire Department honored the late Eugene Mosher, a 43-year veteran firefighter, by transporting his casket Wednesday from Wiles Funeral Home to Fairview Cemetery on board the town's 1931 Maxim fire truck. Mosher, 78, was killed last week in an accident in Gorham.

Soprano Stephanie Gilbert to sing at Nordica Day celebration
FARMINGTON -- A Vassalboro woman has been selected as the solo performer for this year's annual Nordica Day celebration in Farmington, named in honor of Lillian Nordica, the internationally known opera diva from Farmington. The event takes place this Sunday, Aug. 17. Read story for more information.

Upcoming Farmington Fairground events
The "End of Season Hoorah" classic car and motorcycle show and ride, topped off with a pig roast and auction, kick-off a weekend of events that starts Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Farmington Fairgrounds.
The event is being organized by the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and area organizations and sponsored by local businesses.
In addition to the classic, vintage and antique cars and motorcycle on display, there will also be a kid's pig scramble with prizes of new bicycles and helmets donated by Wal-Mart and NorthStar EMS and a wife-carrying competition.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, the Farmington Rotary Club will hold an auction and barbecue with a cash bar, music by the Smith Brothers of Industry, and Shady Lane Farms will roast the pig on the grounds. The suggested price is $6.
The fairgrounds will have its agricultural museum open as well as the sap house, Little Red Schoolhouse museum, and blacksmith shops and there will giveaways and raffles, vendors, food and music. Admission is $3 per person and free for those under 12. Gates open at 9 a.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 24, the motorcycle raffle run ride will travel through Franklin County with cash prizes for winning raffle tickets. The ride leaves at 9 a.m. from the fairgrounds, and breakfast will be available for purchase.
Riders will be asked to make per-bike donations to benefit the Fallen Soldier Memorial Fund. The Augusta Emblem Club is raising $10,000 for two memorial sculptures that will be placed at the Maine National Guard's Camp Keyes and the Statehouse in Augusta to honor the sacrifices of Maine soldiers who gave their lives for their country. Learning Garden, Aug. 13
FARMINGTON - There will be a Learning Garden Open House on Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. until noon at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office at 147 Farmington Falls Road in Farmington.
Featured will raised-bed gardens with vegetable and flowers including demonstrations on pest management, growing sweet potatoes and maximizing food production in a small space. For information, call Dave Fuller at 778-4650 or 1-800-287-1478. The event is open to all and the garden is handicapped-accessible.

Compost bins available for pick-up
FARMINGTON - It's not too late to start composting.
This year, Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District, is offering compost bins for a late summer pick-up. The 30-by-35-inch bins are available for $75 plus tax. Orders must be received by Friday, Aug. 22. They can be picked up on Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at 107 Park St., Farmington.
Orders for blueberry and raspberry bushes along with fruit trees available for next May's annual shrub sale. For information about the shrub sale or compost bins, contact info@franklincswcd.org, or call 778-4279.

Multimedia Trek rolls into Farmington The first 100 of more than 1,800 trekkers began rolling into Farmington before noon June 13 as the 24th annual Trek across Maine kicked off its first of three-day legs.
