Give me a break! People own businesses to make money. Offer whines over a 5% discount? That little sales gimmick probably increased sales for Shell oil by 15%-20%. Hello? Do the math. Nice little increase in sales.
Another reason for the high profit numbers? Simple math, a 10% profit on $4.00 is $.40. 10% profit on $2.49 or whatever gas cost now is only $.249. I'm sure you won't see such big profit numbers in the next report.
Why don't we hear people screaming about price gouging when JC Penney has a 75% off sale or Kohls has a buy one get one free? Now there's a case of price gouging!report abuse

Mr. Offer, that's a perfect description of unrestrained, unregulated capitalism, the economic system so condemned by Karl Karx in his "Das Kapital." Anyone with reason could see where economies were headed in the 1850s in Europe -- revolution, socialism, communism -- caused by unrestrained greedy capitalists.

If Teddy Roosevelt were here today, he'd be riding around the country calling for the types of regulations that we have abandoned in the name of "free enterprise." I just hope there's someone who can rein in the excesses without over-reacting.report abuse
