Vote "no" on Question 2. Don't allow a casino in Oxford County.

A casino may look like easy money, but we cannot...

Casinos are not the best answer to Maine's problems, by all means. But who is offering anything else? Do you see a rush of businesses headed into Maine? High-paying jobs being created? ANY jobs being created? Any income from the state that isn't from highly-taxed residents?

I agree with taxedmainer on this one, though I do so reluctantly. I just wish there were some major industries which would truly bring wealth and prosperity to Maine, but I don't see any on the horizon...report abuse

You cannot compare Harrington, Delaware's casinos to the one proposed in Oxford County. It's apples to oranges. The Delaware casinos are exclusively gaming facilities -- no real hotel operations, etc. Most people who visit are from Delaware or Pennsylvania. The economic benefits are entirely different because of this.

The Oxford County resort casino will attract people from throughout New England to a full-service destination resort. As Pat Lamarche said, this is a resort with a casino inside... not just a casino like Delaware.

And unlike Delaware, I feel like Olympia Development is being upfront about this -- they will hire 900 people to staff the place, giving them good jobs with benefits. Plus, they will pay $50 million every year in taxes -- a portion of which will stay right in Oxford and Oxford County to pay for those needed services like police and fire.

This is an easy choice. I'm voting yes because we need jobs in Maine, we need new tax revenue, and now is not the time to push economic development away.report abuse
