J.P. Devine is using "kitchen table" both literally and metaphorically--i.e., the same way our presidential candidates are using "Wall Street" and "Main Street" these days.

Central Mainers are incredibly lucky to have someone as intelligent and thoughtful as Devine writing for the KJ and the Morning Sentinel. He's nothing less than the heart and soul of the Sunday paper.report abuse

This column left me with a nostalgic, warm glow. It also gives a touch of hope for our future...that as a nation we've been through this before, and looking back at how families coped then imparts inspiration and strength for the tasks facing this generation, to overcome our national crisis.

Indeed, we would all be well advised to simplify our lives: spend less, waste less, and perhaps gather at the kitchen table more often.

Thank you, JP!report abuse

Good story but how many familys have a kitchen table or even sit down to a meal at it.Ten years ago when my daughter was in high school not even half the kids had a meal sitting at the table. They ate junk food or sandwiches or whatever in front of the TV. No one sat together & ate, visited, told things that happened during the day. The family "thing" has sort of outdated, Mama doesn't cook anymore.report abuse

Great column as usual, Mr. Devine.

"john smith", why do you bother reading his columns if all you're going to do is waste your time whining, moaning, and attacking him thereafter? What's the point? If you don't enjoy reading the guy, stop reading the guy.

Some people just need something to b**ch about, I guess.report abuse
