It's tragic when an infant gets seriously ill. While I am not suggesting that the family should not seek treatment for their infant, I hope the family takes some time out to think about treatment options from several sources, quality of life for their infant, and spiritual issues. Complicated for sure and it's human nature to want to cure and fix even if it prolongs suffering and diminishes quality of life.report abuse

I have been a cancer survivor for many years and one thing my oncologist told me is that we are all born with "cancer cells". He told me to think of them as square cells that sometimes just all gang up in one place and do harm. I believe that yes there is a possibility that what we eat and where we live all have something to do as to whether or not we get cancer. Just think of all the chemicals in our food today that didnt exist 40-50 years ago.
NewYorkLeash: as to the possibility of "cancer clusters" in certain areas how many of those people were born & raised in those areas? I know someone that did a study on "cancer Clusters" several years ago and what he found out was that 75% of those in that area that had cancer had moved there from someplace else.
I sincerely hope that little Faylynn's family is not taking the word of the doctors in Bangor as gospel but that they have all contacted any and all treatment centers for children with cancer. No, I'm not saying that the doctors don't know what they are doing I just think that there is a possibility that there just might be some one out there that has treated children as young as Faylynn. What about St. Jude's Childrens Hospital? My prayers are with this family during this very difficult time.report abuse

Rick, I see you're in Winslow too...What should we expect from the recent Dam tear down and revealing the chromium in the sediment of the Sebasticook? Jane Edwards brought up the subject and from what I understand, the levels were very high...All I know is that I have been sick and getting sicker since I came to Winslow, Maine...Fairfield was considered a 'cancer cluster' and many I have known have been affected there, they no longer have that in the headlines but they built a cancer center in Augusta...Build it and they will come...I think we need to call Erin Brockovich :)
I hope this family has sought out many opinions esp. from Stony Brook Univ in NY...
My niece battled back from an 'incurable' brain tumor which spread through her body...Only one oncologist had faith and his treatment protocol, while not easy nor painless, kept her alive and allowed her to become a healthy and gorgeous 16 year old today...Thank you Dr. Parker!!!report abuse

Not sure exactly what it is in Central Maine, but when I was a kid, cancers in children was unheard of - and now it's happening all the time in children and young adults.report abuse
