When we moved to the area in the early 70's I recall Waterville had 20,000+ residents and major industry - ALL GONE - NEVER TO RECOVER. But how can you change the rules mid stream (pun intended) on waste discharge and not grant Oakland a grandfathered license? Dun?report abuse

"One of the things we have to be careful of," he said, "is we have to protect our users and our future users in Waterville."
This shouldn't be a problem. Waterville will be an unorganized township in about 10 years.report abuse

“For the last 36 years the Oakland Sewerage treatment plant has discharged wastewater into an impounded portion of Messalonskee Stream.

State law no longer permits using an impounded body of water for that purpose -- the Oakland treatment plant has operated without a permit for the last three years.”

Is this another example of the Maine DEP hiding it’s mistakes.

In the late seventies the DEP licensed the Vassalboro Sanitary District to dump 72,000 gallons a day of Vassalboro’s municipal wastewater into the China Lake Outlet Stream that emptied into the Fort Halifax impoundment in Winslow. See DEPU.ORG home page for Vassalboro Sewerage District licnese.

Could this be the smoking gun that prompted the DEP to push for the removal of the Fort Halifax Dam?

This is another crooked deal brought to you by your Maine DEP. Protecting our environment or protecting special interests?report abuse
