Look for MEMCO wood boilers(most are from the '70's). They are in the basements of many old homes, but not being used. They can be painted up to look like new. Use them to heat your water, fire them up every other day, then you have to have a dump zone for when it gets to a certain temp. Don't use it to heat your home unless you have unlimited wood. Use a fire place insert or reg. stove hook up for the rest of the house. I only used about 10 gall. of oil last winter for times I didn't fire up the boiler for hot water. Just get them hooked up by someone qualified to do so. Memco is still in Jay, but they only have parts (grates, etc.), they are a plumbing store. How about those cordwood companies screwing the buyers out of a true cord, and jacking up the prices...life sucks. Get a woodlot.report abuse

There is one "small catch" with this feel good loan program for heat. Applicants still have to pass a credit check. How many elderly, low or no income Mainers are going to fail that? Many.

No credit=no low cost loan for heatreport abuse

I would ask for the picture and location of the house be removed. Thieves see all that copper and will be staking out the house. They have hit my house while I was away and it stinks. The scrap yards and police just said oh well.report abuse

Sounds like two great programs that will help quite a few people with heating costs. It's nice to see the credit unions step up to the plate on this issue. If you live in Maine, you gotta burn wood!report abuse
